OMG! We used to drive all over town chasing decent catfish. This is better than Jumpin Catfish (north location has closed), Corner Cafe, Deb's in Riverside (closed) and way better than Niece's. I had blackened catfish, greens, and red beans and rice. Hubby had fried catfish, coleslaw, and red beans and rice. Awesome! Totally clean; including the bathroom. They have a side parking lot so parking is not an issue. They are easily handicapped accessible. I tend to go on and on. This is the best blackened catfish I've had in 27 years!! You've got to try it.

My teenaged boys LOVED eating here. The portions were large and the food was delicious. The staff is VERY KIND and helpful. The only drawback was the lack of choices for drinks (no fountain soda) but that won't stop us from coming back.

I managed to spell the name wrong and posted this review under "Luftis", so reposting it here. I still really enjoy this place, it's excellent fried fish. "The fish is very good, love the cornmeal coating,. The catfish is great but lately I am all about the whiting. The greens - a mix of mustard or collards and cabbage, are very nice. And the mac and cheese is yummy and a little unusual, tastes like there are mushrooms or something like in there. The fish is never overcooked, it's lovely and flakey under it's cornmeal crispy crust. A good place for fried fish in midtown. Try the whiting, fish on the bone is just better. Never very full when I am there so you should all go there so they will stay open. Friendly service."

I'm stuck between 3 and 4 stars. I think Lufti's deserves more than 3 stars because its clean and has good service, also quick! The fried catfish is great, nice and crispy and not oily or greasy. Flaky and easy to eat. The Coleslaw and potato salad are pretty standard, but great if that's what you are craving at the time. It is served with nice fluffy slices of bread, probably a standard loaf from the grocery store. I paid 11 bucks for my meal plus some sweet tea. There were about 4-5 strips of fish with the meal, at first it looked like a lot but I was able to finish the whole plate and still think about food, maybe I just have a food addiction. I think 4 stars is a small stretch but I did want to give a rating that encouraged people to visit and I don't think 3/5 is going to do that. I was also hoping to get around the 8.50 mark for lunch but... that's becoming hard to do lately. I recommend it if you're craving fried fish! But don't expect anything overly fancy.

Between my son and i we had the catfish and three sides. The fish was crispy, not greasy at all.All the sides were excellent the greens ver special. Will definitely be back.

OK, they've redeemed themselves! I'm back on the Lutfi's train and I'm LOVING it again! I've switched my usual order of fried catfish to the blackened tilapia, and it's a flavorbomb of deliciousness! So, no extra lemon required... This has made me and the lady behind the counter very happy. She totally knows who I am, remembers me every time and is very pleasant and warm. Lutfi's really is the bomb

This place is a real treat. Something to take time for as a local or a tourist to KC. Literally everything I've had from their menu is incredible. Fried, blackened, boiled...the specials are always worth a look. My favorites are the greens, which I wish came in containers 12 times as large, and the fried or blackened catfish. Employees are friendly and the joint is always immaculately clean and never too busy to wait. Prices are a little higher than they should be for the type of food they serve, but it's been worth it every time I've stopped in.

Went here for lunch, the place is very simply decorated, the staff is friendly. The fish was nicely cooked, not a drop of grease on them or the plate. The seasoning could have been better, a little salt and pepper go a long way, but I would also add a little cayenne. The sides were quite bland they too could use a little more seasoning. The red beans and rice is made with minute rice. The green beans really had no flavor. If you want to add salt and pepper to your food you need to take the tops off the shakers as the salt is damp and will not go through the lid. The peppers grind is is much larger then the holes in the shakers lid :D But all in all it wasn't bad. Not sure I would go back, maybe next year to see if there's been any improvement

Fish and sides are great! The wait is too long. But it's fresh and worth the hunger pains.

This catfish will probably kill me but it's just so stinking good! Wonderful folks behind the counter as well. Always leave with a smile.

I had the Comeback Sandwich and a side of rice and beans. WOW WOW WOW Fish was coated in a yummy crispy salty coating (I'm pretty sure it has cornmeal in it) and the fish inside was super moist and flavorful. the bun was square, soft and delish. The sandwich had fish strips, lettuce, tomato, semisweet pickle chips, and red onion. The tarter looked homemade with more of the pickle in it. I also had a red sauce that was super hot and amazing! I couldn't finish the entire sandwich, a generous amount of fish with the large bun, easily could feed two people. The rice and beans were super flavorful, creamy, and yummy. I will definitely recommended to all of my friends. My only regret is not trying Lufti's sooner!

Catfish, greens, fried okra, and red velvet cake. The greens were the star of the show for me, and the fish was nice and crispy, without being dry. Great service and great food.

Stopped in for lunch and had the Fried Fish Sandwich w/Fried Okra Side. Never had Okra before, and it & the Fish Sandwich were delicious. Both were served hot right from the frier and neither were greasy. Would recommend to all. The Staff matched the food quality. Very Good

A few coworkers and I decided to try out Lufti's about a year after they had open. You can get multiple types of fish but I decided to go with the Fried Catfish - and it was really good! My boyfriend and I got a "dinner" side meal and split it. We also had 3 sides and were really full. This is a great place for a quick lunch or dinner with some sides (red beans and rice, fried okra, etc.) that seem like the recipes have been in the family for a while. You gotta try it.

What hidden gem. While on travel I looked these folks up on yelp and bared on reviews I decided to give them a try. Glad I did. Friendly, clean facility, and great food. I will be back.

This is the best catfish in KC! The sides are good, but nothing compares to that flaky spicy deliciously addicting catfish. I could eat a whole pound of it.

I have eaten a lot of fried catfish in a lot of different places and I have to say that Lutfi's fried catfish was about the best I have ever eaten. Good flavorful crunchy crust. The fish were nice and juicy inside, and didn't taste "catfishy" at all. The prices were good too. Will definitely visit again the next time I am in KC.

We ordered the family meal with 1/2 fried & 1/2 blackened catfish with fries and Mac n cheese on the side. I am a huge blackened fish fan and was not disappointed. I did not find the blackened to be too spicy. We have 3 little kids and still came home with a little leftover. The fries were lightly seasoned and the Mac n cheese was creamy. The staff was super friendly.

Mmmmmmm. Lutfi's fried fish is as good as it gets. Perfectly fried but no trace of grease. Hot and tasty. Get some.

Boy was I excited to check out Lutfi's when I saw so many raving reviews by Yelp Elites. I was impressed at how wonderfully clean this restuarant was when I walked in the door, but was shocked at how dismally slow it was during peak lunch hour on a Saturday afternoon. Yelp reviews had also led me to believe this place was going to be dirt cheap, but I would argue that the price vs the portions warrant a "$$" price rating instead of a "$" rating. Honestly, I really didn't find this place to be anything special. When I think of soul food, the term flavorless isn't the first thing that comes to mind. The food was pretty bland. Also, I would expect a soul food restaurant which offers Sweet Tea to have it on point. They had some contraption where you push a button to select unsweet, sweet, or raspberry tea and then pour your drink. Totally missed the mark. The raspberry tea was a good alternative though. $20 for two of us to share 1 lb of catfish, 2 pieces of bread, and 2 sides. We each got the greens for the side. Hello?! Mr. Soul Food Entrepreneur....where is the hot pepper vinegar for the greens? The off brand hot sauce wasn't anything special either. The side portions seemed very small to me as well. Instead of pan fried corn bread, they just cut a regular piece of bread in half and threw it on the plate. The greens came in a little styrofoam souffle cup. The catfish breading was light, which was nice because I expected thick cornmeal breading, but again...it really lacked seasoning and flavor. I have had bigger, better, and cheaper. I reccomend trying Peachtree before spending your money here.

Best fish place in town! New location at 78th and State Ave KCK. Great prices, excellent service, sides are superb! And the desserts...don't get me started! Will never visit Captain D's or Long John Silvers again. You have to try this place!!

  • Nicole C.

This place was a nice surprise. The fried catfish was excellent and we also really enjoyed the blackened catfish, too! I am surprised that I kind of liked the blackend fish as much as the fried. The mac and cheese is awesome! The cole slaw is not homemade, which is disappointing and the sweet tea is also just basic generic sweet tea. The three main reasons for the 5 stars is the fish, the dining room being so clean AND the staff. ANGEL has the sweetest smile and is super sweet and helpful. I can't wait to go again to see her face and eat this excellent food! Yum!

    I. Love. Lutfi's. This place has the best catfish I have ever had. The catfish comes with bread, which I am guessing you are supposed to make a sandwhich with, but I just dip the catfish in the hot sauce they have and it's mind blowing. We also tried a few of the sides. The fries and the green beans are my favorites of the sides. We also had the greens and fried okra, which were also pretty good. The mac and cheese was not my favorite, but no big deal on that! Service is wonderful too, they have some of the best ladies working there that helped us! Just remember, it's pronounced Loo-fee's.

The sides are slacking, but Lutfi's has the best fried catfish north of the oklahoma border, hands down.

I'm allergic to fish, so my visit to Lutfi's has been pending for some time. I finally decided to load up on benadryl and head on over with my girlfriend and her family to see what all the buzz was about. Lutfi's definitely did not disappoint. As most everyone else has said, this is simple soul food done right. I had the blackened shrimp (not allergic to shellfish, thankfully) which were just freaking delicious. I believe someone else referred to the blackened offerings as a "flavor bomb," and that's exactly right. The creole seasoning hits like Tyson. The sides we had, mac and cheese, fried okra, and fries were all great. The fries and okra were crisp and crunchy without being soggy with oil, and they were seasoned well. Of course, the catfish was the main attraction. It was beautifully fried in deliciously seasoned corn meal with the perfect amount of crunch. It was totally worth a little bit of upper airway constrcition and tingling lips. I would call the prices here average or slightly below. We fed a hungry group of 5 for ~$40, and I'd consider that pretty darn good. The staff are all really nice and stopped by frequently to check on us. Good food, good prices, good people. There's not a lot to dislike about Lutfi's. i will most definitely be back.

I am a tough critic when it come to fried fish. I grew up the son of that momma that could make everything taste good, especially soul food. I have been to this establishment 5 times, most of which I was having a craving for and traveled out of my way to procure. I'm sure I could have gone to many places instead, however when deciding that I wanted to eat some good ol fried fish, the only place I could think of was Lutfi's. Well, either that or fly to South Carolina and get momma to make me some. Their friendly staff was polite, the fish was fresh, the recipe is consistent, and they invited me to come back again. I typically get the blackened comeback sandwich. Ha!, go figure, the comeback sandwich made me come back 4 more times. I'll be back again too.

  • Elaine D.

They've got some decent fried catfish here, (not as good as Mad Jack's) and some good side dishes too. Get the fried okra! I've mostly been for lunch and they are quick and courteous.

So as with the other locations, this Lutfi's has awesome fish with awesome sides (love their greens). It is much bigger than the other neighborhood locations and the staff is very knowledgable and prides themselves on knowing their returning customers by name. What had me floored this trip was something new... SHRIMP!!!!!! Yes, Lutfi's now has shrimp and they are so juicy and flavorful with Lutfi's signature spic coating. A must try. Now you can only get this as a meal, but it is so worth it.

Hate to be the first one to break the string of perfect 5 ratings but I'm doing just that--but I'm not complaining! This bare bones Main Street fried fish haven is just downright fine, and the folks working there couldn't have been nicer. Now, some of this is frozen stuff out of the frier but that doesn't mean it always comes out right. Ours did. The catfish was perfectly breaded and seasoned (assuming they may do this themselves) and moist. Delicious. The red beans and rice were the star of the side dishes and did not disappoint with the slightly spicy dark brown rue that provided much of the taste. The fried okra I assume was pre-frozen but was just fine... if there's something that begs frying, it's okra. Know this: you come here you're in a fried fish dive on Main Street, KCMO. It ain't a pretty place and there are no waiters/waitresses (but they do bring your food out--you order at the counter). Don't mistake it for a date venue unless your significant other likes a hulking plate of fried fish. The food and atmosphere are unpretentious and all about satisfying a serious hunger. For those times when your belly is longing for an over-the-top soul food stuffing, Lutfi's will deliver. Oh, and then there's Ray Charles and other great black music in rotation throughout the restaurant. That was just *fine* with me. $21 for two for lunch and we left about as full as we could get. Sweet.

First time ever having fried catfish - i loved it. I think I'll do the sandwich next time because the dinner was HUGE! The restaurant is clean and the staff is so nice!! You can tell that it's a fun place to work and I dig knowing people like their places of work. I also think that the prices are directly correlated with the amount of food you get. Go try it! I did hear another patron say "this is the best fish in the city!" - I cant tell you for sure cause it's the first time I had it but it is pretty tasty!

If anyone has ever been to an authentic southern hole in the wall fry basket joint then you know what to expect at Lufti's both good and bad. Their service was friendly but not attentive. I was not put off by that in fact I thought it added charm. As for the food. I was not a fan of the fried catfish, I found the texture chewy and the flavor bland. The blackened was very good. Some places are better at their sides than the main dish and Lufti's is like that. I loved the mac n cheese, which to be honest I never "rave" about in reviews. The mac and cheese is creamy and tasted of real cheese. I really liked their "hot" sauce - its not hot, but full of flavor and their tarter sauce is crisp and not bogged down with mayo. The place was clean which is more than I can say for some of the fry houses I used to eat at in Alabama. The Main street location had plenty of room and even had some game boards set up. There was one big screen showing ESPN for me to watch as I waited for my food. As a note I REALLY wanted to try their shrimp but they were sold out it was lunch time so it doesn't seem to bode well for the dinner crowd.

Our group of ten was greeted by a wonderful cashier who we entrusted to order our lunch. The main dishes included their famous catfish and fried chicken wings. We all pretty much agreed that the thin crunchy filets of goodness were the best catfish we've ever had! In addition, the lightly breaded wings were full of flavor and could hold up to any of my other favorite chicken places However, the sides were just okay. The French fries and fried okra the best of all of them, but red beans and rice were a bit too vinegary but the spicy greenbeans were good but not off the charts. If looking for a great local catfish and chicken place I'd go to Lufis. I wish someone would start a franchise in S Cal! Even with the mediocre sides, I'll still give this place a FIVE, cuz the catfish and chicken were off the charts!

Catfish sandwich was the hit, perfectly seasoned and not over cooked. My only disappointment was the Mac n cheese, just not my style, a little too rich and creamy but other then that this place was awesome! I will be back

Stopped in on Sunday around 3:00 pm and the place was empty. No waiting in line was a plus to begin with. We all ordered catfish, shrimp with greens and Mac and cheese. It was awesome, fresh, hot. The staff was very, very nice and they turned the chiefs game on for us. I will be going back again and again. Fantastic local place with great fish.

I had the catfish. I'm not sure I could imagine a better way to prepare catfish. Hot sauce was great too. Very authentic greens, a little spicy and not wimpy. Had the Mac too. This place is definitely going to see me again.

I love catfish, and everything here was pretty great. My boyfriend and I ordered 1lb of catfish, half fried and half blackened. We got green beans and macaroni and cheese on the side, as well as a sweet potato muffin (which was special that day). Including drinks, ~$20 for the both of us. They just have bottled drinks - wish they had a fountain, but no big deal. Everything was pretty fast; order at the window, sit and wait for your meal. Both catfish styles were delicious. I loved the flavor of the blackened (I admit, my first time having blackened catfish), but it was a little spicy for me. The fried were just right, cut into small fillets, crunchy with a little seasoning. Their tartar sauce was a bit on the sweet side, but tasty. Our sides were about 4 oz or so each, which seemed small, but in addition to our pound of fish was not really an issue. The green beans had a little extra flavor I enjoyed, and the macaroni and cheese was super creamy and also had a little flair to it. The sweet potato muffin rounded everything out, with a sweet flavor and cornmeal. My only regret is having ordered so much and not having room for cake! They had huge slices of about 4 different flavors of cake, and they all looked amazing! We were stuffed - I think next time will get a half pound and save room for dessert!

Atmosphere: Clean, inviting & very orange (which we liked) Seating: HUGE - plenty of seating Price: $ Service: Excellent - family-owned & you can tell Experience: Amazingly delightful We've been looking for a really good fried fish place in KC and much to our surprise, Lutfi's opened on Main Street this summer. It's hard to miss their bright orange awning so when it enters your field of vision, turn in and park your car...you won't be disappointed. I think it's family-owned. Everyone said "welcome" when we walked in and "thanks for coming" when we left. They're very attentive. We ordered 1/2 plates of fried catfish and bread with the mac & cheese, okra and the sweet potato muffin. The young man at the counter was beyond polite. Everyone was. Even the other customers. The gentleman next to us actually brought his own hot sauce & offered to let us try it. The fish is fried just right. SERIOUSLY! And it goes well with the hot sauce they provide (no offense to the nice man next to us). The mac & cheese was really creamy and okra was amazing - my girlfriend doesn't like okra but she loved this. I could write a poem about the sweet potato muffin and the nice little lady that served it to us. It comes with a little side of greens that you're supposed to put on the top. It was to die for. We've been back several times and I would recommend the experience at Lutfi's on Main to anyone looking for great food & service to match.

*GHETTO ALERT* The food was decent BUT the service was unprofessional and the lack of business sense is the killer. How in this age of the internet you don't have a webpage?? How do you expect people from out of town to find your business or know what is on your menu? They need to step their game up. I had the shrimp and they were damn good. I gave them 3 stars for the taste of the food.

The catfish was perfect in a cornmeal batter that was light and not greasy. Red beans & rice along with greens on the side made for a really nice meal. Friendly staff, too!

I have noticed Lutfi's and decided that I would try it since it is close to where I work. I went in and the place is clean. Parking was easy on the street as I chose to go after lunch rush. There is a woman taking orders and she is engaged in a conversation with a man. I walk up to place my order after perusing the menu first. The menu isn't very extensive but that's fine. I understand this is just fish...pretty much and I wanted fish. So, the woman acts like she is going to talk to me and then abruptly turns away and keeps talking to this other fellow. So, the second and third times, I greet her as she looks at me and acts like she is going to say something only to abruptly turn away from me again and continue to converse with this man who is slowly leaving and talking about some kind of business with an attorney, blah, blah, blah...ok...here we go, I'm thinking...I'll just need to be patient. So, finally, the guy does leave the building and the woman turns and glares at me and says nothing. So, I greet her again, nothing, and I place my order. She hollers back at someone and takes my money and that's it. Ok. That's fine. So, I get the fish rather quickly. Nice. And take it back to work. It's tasty, it's crispy...it's average. I can get a better meal at City Fish or Mad Jack's in KCK with a lot more goodies and a lot better service. No need for me to go to Lutfi's again.

We came here for hubby's birthday and he was not disappointed. I don't even like fish that much, and I thought it was excellent. Perfectly fried but not greasy. The sides were good, too. We had Mac & cheese and red beans & rice. Really good stuff. We'll be back!

Stopped into day for an early dinner around 4PM. My hotel staff recommended this place! I am from out of town, and this was my first time here. No wait time at all. The man who took my order was very polite and helped me navigate the menu as a first timer. He recommended the basa/catfish (apparently the same thing), and then recommended the red beans and rice and mac n cheese. I got the blackened catfish, because i think it's easier to taste the fish when it's not fried! It was very tender and delicious. I would have gone for a little LESS seasoning, but the fish was definitely fresh. Red beans and rice. Delicious. I have no idea what sauce was in there, but it was good! Mac n cheese: creamy, okay- did not impress me as the noodles were falling apart and a bit soggy for my taste. 1 piece of bread - nothing special about the bread. The man who took my menu often checked in on me, and I thought the service was great. Maybe waited about 7 minutes or so for the food. The 1/2 pound dinner was just enough food for me, and I'm quite the eater.

The wings are made to order..so be prepared to wait..you can't rush perfection...the wings are the BOMB! Seasoned perfectly...done to the bone...the catfish was OUTSTANDING! Get the 1lb so you can share our take some home....the side items were decent...tried the greens, fried okra and fries....Will definitely return!

It's a convenient location with good fish! The quality of customer service is subpar but not bad to the point I wouldn't comeback. Overall if your in the Westport/Plaza area and want some quality fish this would be ideal and not to far out of the way.

Everyone raves about the fish here but I really liked their fried chicken wings!! It's made fresh so it takes about 15-20 minutes but it came out piping hot and delicious. My order of chicken wing and fries was around ~7 and also came with some slices of bread. Huge portions for a great place. I like their fried chicken better than Go Chicken Go

Love this place! The food is good, the service excellent! Shane at the front is always pleasant greeting you with a smile! I ordered the smoked chicken wings and they are HUGE and delicious. Their desserts are fabulous and 1 order is enough for 2 people.

Have always wondered if this place was any good as it is not fancy at all. It was awesome! Definitely go for the fried catfish as that is their specialty....it is not greasy. The banana pudding is the only dessert made in house and you can certainly tell, it tastes like my grandmothers. Give this place a try!

Walked down here from the Fairfield Inn as it was highly recommended by staff. Environment: very open space right when you walk in. Parking is just next door with large lot. Very clean and even floor mats look spotless and recently vacuumed. Tables wiped off and cleared off quickly. Good chill background music and also a large Flatscreen playing ESPN if you're up for watching a game. Great street view as the front is literally all windows. Food: Ordered the 1/2 lb Boston Fried Catfish with mac/cheese and Red Beans and Rice. BEST batter I've ever had. Not oily and fish is great. Sides were fantastic. Service: great service at the register and recommended a few things.

  • Sandy Z.

The catfish was fantastic! It was crispy, but not greasy. I got the 1 pound meal that came with 2 sides. Coleslaw and red bean with rice were delicious as well. I paid $15 + change and I finished the entire thing over lunch. I'm a big advocate for better value and this was not one of the better values around Kansas City. A long john silvers would have been cheaper. I'm certainly grateful for a place that does catfish so well though. Will I be back? Yes I will.

  • DJuan L.

The food here always comes out fresh & hot and is cooked to order. I've ordered over the phone and in person and the customer service here is pretty good as well. The prices aren't the cheapest, but they do serve quality food and it's always good!

I never liked catfish until I went here. I have heard many people talk about Luftis and when I finally gave in it was FANTASTIC! That make their own tarter sauce. I like the comeback sandwich. The name sez it all. You will come back. Wifey and I split a 1/2 pound with fries and that is great. Dip the fries in tarter sauce is fun. They also make these cakes that are a sweet treat. Wifey loves the greens and macaroni and cheese.
